From the smell of home cooked food
And sounds of many cooks in the kitchen
Using Nanny’s old timeless recipes
And Dad adding his own spice to it all
From the sausage and salmon patties I loved to eat Nanny would tell me I ate so much of them; I was going to become one
I am from my mother’s love and my father’s spice for life my mother’s northern roots and father’s southern ones
From the mountains of the Appalachians Where I’ve always felt most at home
From hard workers Every penny rightfully earned Papa Holbrook worked in the coal mines And Papa Williams was a military man
I am from many things But most of all love, family, and togetherness
My name is Jessica Holbrook. I’m originally from Bristol, VA. I lived there until July of 2002 when my parents divorced and we moved with my mom to Gastonia, NC. I went to high school at Highland School of Technology where I was able to learn about Graphic Design, but an internship at a special needs school in my county during my senior year pulled my heart to teaching. Growing up I had always tossed around the idea of being a teacher, but the passion for it really struck me during that internship. I have wanted to be a student at Appalachian since I was 11 years old and came to Boone on a school trip where we toured the campus and saw a football game. I’m very glad that I’m fortunate enough to be in the wonderful education program here at Appalachian, and I look forward to getting to know you all throughout our Block experience.
