My name is Christian Chaney and I am currently a junior elementary education major here at Appalachian State University. I am originally from Monroe, NC. I moved here to Boone, NC in the summer before my 6th grade year and have loved the mountain region ever since. My family still lives here; my father Mark, mother Mitzi, and sister Rebekah are very close (less than 20 minutes away). I work for University Housing as a Resident Assistant and really enjoy my job. I love spending time with my friends doing anything active. I enjoy hiking, camping, playing any kind of sport and really just taking advantage of the blessing of living here in such a beautiful place. My father is a pastor and my faith is a huge part of my life. My mother is a teacher and really is part of the inspiration for why I want to become an educator. My sister is 16 years old and we are pretty close, much closer than we were when we were younger. Everything about Appalachian amazes me; I have made friendships that will last a lifetime and learned things that if not for being here, I would never have gotten the chance to realize. I have been ridiculously blessed with everything in my life and I am hopeful for what the future has in store.

I am first from flat, hot land
the summertime.

I am from cool days with the windows open
and a constant breeze all day long.
laying around and enjoying the simple things.

I am from honeysuckle, blackberries, fresh garden veggies,
and scratch baked pies and cakes from my grandma Iva.

I am from “don’t be afraid of change”,
real men aren’t afraid to cry,
and always know what you’ll do before you get there.

I am from hard times and new pages,
Friday nights with grandpa,
and memories that make me who I am today.
